Climb up to Le Suquet
Above the old port, Le Suquet is the ancient heart of Cannes. You climb along small lanes lined with ochre houses and bougainvillea, up to the Notre-Dame-d’Espérance church and the square Suquet Tower, visible from across the bay. At the top, the view sweeps over the city, the Lérins islands and the Esterel; an ideal panorama for a first date, when the lights come on along the sea.
Forville market and Rue Meynadier
Forville market, under its wrought-iron hall, bustles every morning except Monday. Produce from the inland hills, fish straight from the morning catch, Provence cheeses, bunches of mimosa: you come here together to put a seaside picnic together. Carry on down Rue Meynadier and its old shops to buy a fougassette, the orange-blossom brioche dear to the people of Cannes.
Old port and sunlit strolls
The old port of Cannes, framed by the Palais des Festivals and Le Suquet, lines up fishermen’s pointus and grand yachts. You share an ice cream on Place de l’Étang, then stroll along the quays at dusk, when the sails fade into the horizon. On Lyad, the people of Cannes share their favourite lanes; it is up to you to find someone to lose your footsteps with in Le Suquet.
